Certifications and Standards
The Recessed Lighting Specialist Training Program (RLSTP) adheres to rigorous certification and training standards. Specific entry requirements, expert guidance, a well-established curriculum, and a demanding certification exam ensure a level of expertise that is unmatched in the home improvement industry.
Eligibility
To be eligible for admission to the RLSTP, applicants must meet one of the following prerequisites:
- Hold a valid State Electrician License or Certification
- Be employed by a licensed electrical contractor*
- Be enrolled in an officially recognized trade school or apprenticeship program*
*Participants may complete the training but must have accrued a minimum of 2000 hours of verifiable on the job experience before they are eligible to sit for the certification exam.
Course Objectives
After completing the RLSPT, participants will be able to:
- Explain the key lighting concepts of cone theory and lighting layers, including general, task, and accent lighting.
- Calculate the proper placement and spacing of recessed lights in any size room, ensuring optimal illumination for general, task, and accent lighting.
- Describe the types of recessed lights available and identify the best use cases for each type.
- Recommend appropriate lighting controls to use for various installation scenarios.
- Overcome common homeowner concerns when hiring a contractor for home projects and exceed their expectations.
- Properly use specialty tools for recessed lighting installations to minimize impact to a home.
- Implement the RLS process to prevent damage, dust and mess while working in a client's home.
- Explain the relevant electrical codes and regulations that apply to recessed lighting installations.
- Describe the step-by-step Recessed Lighting Specialist installation process.
- Apply best practices for updating old/existing lighting with new recessed lighting.
- Troubleshoot common recessed lighting issues and provide effective solutions.
